BRIEF ABOUT CATERING DEPARTMENT
Catering department is the hospitality wing of the University of Nairobi. It provides catering services to students , headed by the Catering Manager who is supported by qualified catering staff.
The history of catering services can be traced to1970 when a department of Catering and Residential services was established. Its main services were to provide food to resident students of the University of Nairobi. The Halls institute as it was then called was abolished in 1980, following a recommendation of the senate committee and its functions were taken over by the office of the Dean of Students. Later the government formed University Students Accommodation Board (USAB) to take charge of Catering in all public Universities.
Our kitchens and Cafeterias are spread over the eleven campuses and we also have Cafeterias in Mombasa and Kisumu Campuses.
Our kitchens operate from Monday to Sunday as follows:
- Breakfast 6am to 9am
- Lunch 12 noon to 3 pm
- Dinner 6 pm to 8pm
Our prices are affordable; our menus are broad and of the right nutritional values, special diets are offered on request. We also have arrangements where students pay for meals in advance and eat on account popularly known as pay in advance.
In the Income generating units, we offer: conference facilities, hold workshops, outside catering, wedding functions, cocktails, banquets, cater for UON Graduation ceremony, office deliveries and we are also open to the public

The department is responsible for ten kitchens and five income generating units, namely:
- Mamlaka kitchen, on Mamlaka Road, Main campus, next to SWA Headquarters/Ufungamano House
- Kitchen one, Lower state House Road, Main campus
- Women’s hall kitchen, Mamlaka Road, next to Nairobi Primary school
- Chiromo kitchen, on Riverside Drive, Chiromo campus
- Parklands kitchen, Parklands campus
- Kenyatta Medical Students’ kitchen, Ngong read, next to KMTC/Kenyatta National Hospital
- Kenya Science kitchen, Ngong Road, Kenya Science Campus
- Kikuyu kitchen, Kikuyu Campus
- Upper Kabete kitchen, Upper Kabete Campus
- Lower Kabete kitchen, Lower Kabete Campus
INCOME GENERATING UNITS (CAFETERIAS)
- Varsity Catering Services, Main campus, next to the UON graduation field
- Student Center and Stella Awinja are on Mamlaka road and Chiromo SWA Cafeteria is in Chiromo campus. These are managed by one Manager.
- Comcare, Dental and Pharmacy cafeterias are in Kenyatta Medical School also managed by one Manager
- Kisumu Cafeteria, Kisumu City
- Uniplaza, Mombasa City
STAFF
We have qualified staff in all our outlets. All the kitchens are manned by a catering officer in-charge.
